On January 21, Russia celebrates Postgraduate Student's Day.
This holiday has not yet been endowed with official status, but it is already called international, because it is widely celebrated in many countries of the post-Soviet space. Moreover, every year it is gaining more and more popularity.
The history of this day dates back to the first years of the formation of the USSR. On January 21, 1925, the Council of People's Commissars approved the "Regulations on University Researchers". Informally, they started congratulating young scientists in 2008 - then the date of February 8, the Day of Russian Science, was proposed for celebration. However, it was not approved, since the initiators rightly noted that graduate students should have their own solemn date.
Postgraduate studies at UAI-UGATU were opened 60 years ago in 1962. Its first graduate students were university graduates, future outstanding scientists, doctors of sciences, professors Albert Mukhametovich Akhmedzyanov, Viktor Sergeevich Mukhin, Boris Petrovich Rudoy, Leva Shmulevich Shuster.
During the first years, the vice-rector for scientific work supervised the postgraduate studies. In addition, in 1970, when the number of graduate students exceeded 50, a postgraduate department was created at the university.
In 1972, the first thesis presentation was held at the institute's council for awarding academic degrees of candidates of science. In 1976, three specialized councils for the master's theses began to work (specialties: mechanics, automation and aircraft engineering).
Today, the university has six dissertation councils in technical and physical and mathematical sciences. Postgraduate students are trained in 12 areas, including "Computer and Information Sciences", "Aviation and Rocket and Space Engineering", "Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials", "Electrical and Thermal Engineering", etc. A new training program "Earth Sciences" has recently been opened ".
At present, 109 young scientists are studying at the USATU postgraduate course, including seven citizens of foreign countries - representatives from China, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Senegal, Tunisia and Palestine.
“PhD is a serious step that requires deep immersion, dedication and a lot of time. However, if a young researcher is focused on scientific activity, teaching at a university or building a serious career, then postgraduate studies open up new horizons and wide opportunities. The PhD degree is highly valued, and its presence puts a person on a new level of competitiveness,” said Sergey Novikov, rector of the USATU.
