The Russian Ministry of Health has registered the Gam-COVID-Vak (Sputnik V) nasal vaccine against coronavirus, which became the world's first vaccine of this format, the ministry's press service reported on Telegram.
“The vaccine, like Sputnik V, consists of two components based on adenoviral vectors of the 26th and fifth types and is administered using a special spray nozzle into the nasal cavity with an interval of three weeks, that is, in the “prime- boost,” the message said.
The drug forms immunity on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. Patients have increased titers of IgA antibodies in the blood and nasal mucus and IgG antibodies that neutralize the virus in the blood. In addition, the drug causes a cellular immune response to the coronavirus.
Citizens over 18 years old can use it, the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation reported.
The nasal vaccine against COVID-19 was developed by the Center. Gamaleya, who created the world's first coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V. The Ministry of Health authorized its clinical trials in October last year, 500 volunteers were supposed to take part in them until December 31, 2023.
By March 7, the drug had already been administered to 104 volunteers, they had no side effects, said Alexander Gintsburg, head of the center. At the same time, he clarified that experts do not have data on 100% protection against infection, so the patient should be vaccinated with a classic drug before administration.
Gunzburg said that it would be necessary to apply the spray no more than once every six months. A person who is additionally vaccinated with a nasal vaccine will not spread the virus, he argued.
