An off-site meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture was held at St. Petersburg Mining University. Representatives of the Nedra Consortium also took part in the meeting. Rector Sergei Novikov headed the USATU delegation.

It should be noted that USATU is a member of the Consortium, which unites the country's higher educational institutions with areas of study related to the training of specialists for the mineral resource complex of Russia. The collaboration is based on the need to combine the efforts of universities to create a single educational space, develop academic mobility and improve the quality of Russian graduates through these mechanisms.

At the meeting, issues of assessing the effectiveness of scientific research and development, the training of scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel in graduate school, and the engineering training of graduates of technical universities were discussed.

Rector of the Mining University Vladimir Litvinenko noted that modern society as a whole underestimates the importance of the resource base lying in the Russian subsoil:

- Raw materials are the basis for the sustainability of any economy. However, while it lies in the depths, it is an inert potential. In order to monetize it, we need competent specialists who will be able to effectively search for and explore new mineral deposits, increase the profitability of their extraction, transportation and use, and improve energy efficiency. Unfortunately, their deficit today is obvious.

One of the reasons for this state of affairs, he called insufficient attention to this problem on the part of the government. Thus, most of the state order for the training of personnel for the mining and oil and gas industry is carried out through undergraduate educational programs. But students who receive diplomas after four years of study, that is, in fact, pass it in an accelerated mode, with all their desire, cannot be called engineers.

The Chairman of the Federation Council Committee of the Russian Federation on Science, Education and Culture Liliya Gumerova noted that the rejection of the classical system of personnel training, which proved its full worth during the Soviet Union, led to a drop in the quality of graduates. The conclusion is obvious: there is every reason to return to the former format of education.

 - A draft federal law has been developed, which states that the training of personnel, the demand for which is due to technological development and modernization of the Russian economy, should be carried out exclusively with a higher education level - a specialist. We are talking, in particular, about engineers and doctors. This is because it is within the framework of the specialty that they have the opportunity to acquire unique skills and competencies. To master not only basic, but also highly specialized knowledge, - Lilia Gumerova explained.

Dmitry Vasilenko, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation for Science, Education and Culture, specified that the final list of specialties and areas of training for students who will study exclusively in specialist programs is planned to be formed by the end of the year.

The participants of the Nedra Consortium also toured the educational centers of the Mining University, got acquainted with the educational and scientific complex of the university: specialized classrooms of the companies BELZAN, Schneider Electric, Caterpillar.
