Scientists from the Ufa State Aviation Technical University have developed a technology for creating dental implants from nano titanium with a biocompatible coating that accelerates their survival. The development will allow import substitution of foreign analogues. The work was carried out by employees of USATU together with an initiative group of dentists and developers from Chelyabinsk (OOO "NS Technology").
In USATU, under the guidance of Professor Ruslan Valiev, a material for creating dental implants has been developed - nanostructured titanium, which has high strength and biocompatibility. It is obtained by pressure treatment of bars, which leads to their hardening and the creation of a nanocrystalline internal structure.
At the same time, a group of scientists from USATU, led by Professor Evgeny Parfenov, is conducting research in the field of creating biomimetic coatings for titanium implants based on the use of the plasma-electrolytic oxidation method. The resulting coatings have a morphology and physico-chemical composition close to human bone, which significantly accelerates the survival rate of implants with such a coating.
Thus, the studies of the two scientific schools complemented each other and gave excellent results.
When creating a new implant design called Synthes Pro, the developers took into account the experience and recommendations of leading Russian dentists, making a model with a micro-thread for the cortical bone and a wide bladed thread for the spongy bone, designing the design specifically for the use of nano titanium and a biocompatible coating.
“As a scientist, I am convinced that when I offer people a new development in the field of biomedicine, I must be sure of it, and this can only be achieved by trying it on myself. It so happened that I myself had to replace the missing tooth. Conducting research in the field of biocompatible coatings, I did not want to put an imported implant. As soon as our developments were brought to an experimental implant, I decided to install it myself. To date, all stages of implant and artificial tooth installation have been successfully completed, and I can say with confidence by my own example that the use of our technologies speeds up the healing process by 1.5-2 times, does not cause side pain and inflammatory reactions. So with good reason I can recommend our development to dentists and their patients”,Professor Evgeny Parfyonov .
As part of a cooperation agreement with the Chelyabinsk company LLC NS Technology, a Skolkovo resident, the first pilot batch of Synthes Pro implants was manufactured, which passed all the stages of testing and is ready for use. Implementation is planned for this year.

We are entering the territory of the medical technology market in order to master the production of domestic products that are not inferior to world analogues. I am sure that our research and development will become the contribution of Ufa Aviation to the Russian economy, aimed at import-outpacing development,” comments Sergey Novikov, rector of the USATU.
The study was carried out within the framework of the world-class project of the Eurasian Scientific and Educational Center (REC) "Restorative and Regenerative Medicine" with the support of the Russian Science Foundation (projects 20-69-47029, 19-49-02003), its results were published in a number of international publications.
